Munsell Platform Statements
What is your vision for the future of doctoral education for PAs, and how should the Academy lead that direction?
Doctoral education for physician associates (PA) must evolve beyond degree attainment toward measurable impact on patients, systems, and communities. As a doctorally trained PA with over four decades of clinical and educational experience, my vision is for doctoral preparation to become the standard pathway for advancing leadership, scholarship, and innovation within our profession, not as a barrier to entry, but as an accessible, equitable opportunity for growth.
Future doctoral programs should be competency-driven, outcomes-focused, and aligned with the complex realities of modern health care. This includes advanced training in health systems science, implementation science, policy advocacy, interprofessional leadership, and health equity. Programs must intentionally integrate the principles of population health, and social determinants of health to prepare PAs to lead in reducing disparities and improving outcomes at scale.
Equity must be foundational. Flexible, affordable, and inclusive program designs, leveraging asynchronous learning, employer partnerships, and multiple entry points are essential to ensure that experienced clinicians from diverse backgrounds can pursue doctoral education without disproportionate burden.
The Academy should lead by working with other stakeholders to establish clear competencies for doctoral-level PA practice, advocate for recognition of doctoral-prepared PAs in leadership and academic roles and foster a culture that values lifelong learning and scholarly contribution. By doing so, the Academy can position the PA profession not only to respond to health care changes, but to shape it.
How will you actively contribute to advancing the mission and tangible outcomes of the Academy of Doctoral PAs?
As a current board member of the Academy of Doctoral PAs, and a long-standing volunteer to the profession, I will contribute by translating the Academy’s mission into measurable, sustainable outcomes that elevate both individuals and the profession as a whole.
I will champion inclusive engagement by ensuring the Academy represents and values the full spectrum of doctoral preparation (DMSc, DHSc, PhD, EdD, and others), recognizing that each pathway brings unique strengths to clinical practice, education, leadership, and research. I will work to expand membership pathways, mentorship networks, and leadership development opportunities, particularly for underrepresented and emerging voices within our profession.
Operationally, I will support the development of competency frameworks, scholarly dissemination initiatives, and outcomes tracking that demonstrate the tangible impact of doctoral-prepared PAs on patient care, health systems, and education. This includes advancing collaborative research, promoting publication pipelines, and strengthening partnerships with academic institutions and professional organizations.
I will also prioritize mentorship and sponsorship by creating structured opportunities for doctoral students and early-career colleagues to engage in scholarship, leadership, and service. Finally, I will advocate for visibility and recognition of doctoral-prepared PAs in academic, clinical, and policy arenas, ensuring our collective contributions are clearly articulated and valued.
Through intentional collaboration, inclusivity, and accountability, I will help position the Academy as a unifying and forward-moving force for doctoral excellence in the PA profession.
Please share your vision of effective teamwork and your approach to leading a team.
My vision of effective teamwork is grounded in servant leadership, where the primary role of the leader is to create the conditions for others to thrive, contribute meaningfully, and achieve shared goals. High-performing teams are built on trust, psychological safety, and a deep respect for the diverse perspectives and lived experiences each member brings. Equity is not an aspiration but an operational standard; every voice must be actively invited, heard, and valued in decision-making processes.
My approach to leadership begins with listening. I prioritize understanding team members’ strengths, goals, and challenges, and aligning these with the mission at hand. I lead with transparency, accountability, and ethical integrity, ensuring that decisions are fair, inclusive, and grounded in shared values. Clear expectations, open communication, and mutual respect form the foundation of team effectiveness.
Innovation emerges when individuals feel safe to question, create, and challenge the status quo. I foster this by encouraging curiosity, supporting calculated risk-taking, and viewing setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than failure. I also believe in distributed leadership (empowering others to lead within their areas of expertise) and recognizing that the best ideas often come from collaboration, not hierarchy.
My role is to serve, support, and elevate the team which includes removing barriers, cultivating opportunities, and ensuring that our collective work advances meaningful, equitable impact.
How will you represent a diverse membership with varying perspectives on doctoral education while ensuring all voices are heard?
With over four decades of clinical practice, educational leadership, and sustained service to the profession, I recognize that our greatest strength lies in the diversity of perspectives within our professional community. Representing a membership with varying views on doctoral education requires intentional listening, transparency, and a commitment to inclusive dialogue.
I approach this responsibility by creating structured and meaningful opportunities for engagement, thus ensuring that voices across the spectrum of doctoral preparation, career stages, and practice settings are not only invited, but actively heard and valued. This includes fostering open forums, mentorship networks, and collaborative initiatives that encourage respectful exchange of ideas and shared problem-solving.
There will always be a seat at the table for those with an interest in propelling the profession forward. My role is to ensure that space is equitable, welcoming, and grounded in mutual respect, where different perspectives are seen not as barriers, but as essential contributions to thoughtful progress.
Ours is an ever-evolving profession, founded on patient-centered access to medical care for all. This foundational principle guides my leadership and reinforces the importance of unity amid diversity. By honoring our shared mission while embracing innovation and inclusivity, I will work to ensure that all members feel represented, empowered, and connected to the future direction of doctoral education and the profession at large.
