Dr. Alan Heckman, DMSc, PA-C, is the Founding Program Director of the Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) Program at DeSales University and an Associate Professor within the College of Healthcare Professions. He earned his Doctor of Medical Science degree from the University of Lynchburg, his Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from DeSales University, and his undergraduate degree in Secondary Education from Kutztown University.
A nationally recognized educator, clinician, and EMS leader, Dr. Heckman has dedicated his career to advancing the physician associate profession through leadership, innovation, and professional development.
Dr. Heckman currently practices in Critical Care Medicine and has an extensive background in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Throughout his career, he has remained passionate about advancing healthcare education and strengthening the role of clinician leaders across healthcare systems.
At DeSales University, Dr. Heckman led the development and launch of the Doctor of Medical Science program. Under his leadership, the program emphasizes transformational leadership, healthcare systems, education, scholarship, and operational excellence. He has also played a key role in the development of new academic initiatives aimed at advancing EMS and healthcare professional education.
Dr. Heckman is an active advocate for doctoral education and professional advancement within the physician associate profession. He frequently speaks and writes on topics including leadership development, healthcare transformation, professional identity, and the evolving role of doctorally trained physician associates in healthcare administration, education, and systems leadership.
As President-Elect of the Academy of Doctoral PAs (ADPA), Dr. Heckman is committed to fostering collaboration, supporting professional growth, and helping prepare the next generation of physician associate leaders to meet the complex challenges facing modern healthcare.
